Blue phantoms help teach effective cannulation

Blue Phantoms are specialized training devices used to teach clinical staff—including doctors, nurses, midwives, and anaesthetic technicians—how to perform ultrasound-guided cannulation in a safe and effective manner. These phantoms simulate human tissue and vasculature, providing a realistic yet controlled environment in which healthcare professionals can develop and refine their skills without posing any risk to patients.

Our generous donors have enable the anaesthic teaching team to purchase six new Blue Phantoms to support their clincial training, improving care for patients.

Effective training reduces discomfort for patients and saves lives.

Ultrasound-guided cannulation is an essential technique, particularly for patients with difficult vascular access. This can include individuals who are elderly, very young, or those with veins or arteries compromised by repeated medical treatments such as chemotherapy or dialysis. In such cases, visualizing the blood vessels using ultrasound significantly increases the chances of successful and safe cannulation.

Anaesthetic technicians play a key role in training multidisciplinary clinical teams across hospitals. Since it is neither ethical nor safe to allow staff to practice on real patients without prior experience, Blue Phantoms serve as a vital educational resource. These phantoms contain synthetic vessels embedded in gel-like material that mimics human tissue, allowing learners to use real ultrasound probes and practice inserting cannulas with accurate tactile feedback.

The use of Blue Phantoms ensures that clinical staff can gain hands-on experience and confidence in identifying vessels, assessing depth and angle, and coordinating hand-eye movement—all critical components of successful ultrasound-guided cannulation. They also enable repeated practice, which is crucial for mastering such a delicate and precise skill.

By incorporating Blue Phantoms into their teaching sessions, anaesthetic technicians can create a structured, risk-free learning environment that supports competency development across various clinical roles. This ultimately enhances patient safety and outcomes by ensuring that invasive procedures are performed with greater accuracy and efficiency.

Forsyth Barr’s North Shore Office generously supports the hospital’s anaesthetic technicians with a donation enabling the purchase of new Blue Phantom training models..

Special thanks to the our valued sponsors and donors who made this advancement for our hospital possible.
