Hospital children's play area revamp brings joy to young patients
Children receiving care at Waitākere Hospital now have a bright, welcoming space thanks to a revamp of the Rangatira Ward outdoor play area.
The transformation has been made possible through the support of Well Foundation, the charity for North Shore and Waitākere Hospital, and valued Well Foundation sponsor nib NZ.
Caring for around 3,000 children each year from across West and North Auckland, Rangatira Children's Ward plays an important role in medical care for local families. The once tired and uninspiring outdoor space has been transformed into a vibrant, welcoming play area featuring a striking mural depicting the local West Auckland beach and bush by Auckland artist John Feary, custom built wooden play furniture, a new shade sail and fresh turf.
Waitakere Hospital Play Therapist Chloe Davidson says opportunities for play are a vital part of a child's hospital experience.
“Play helps children make sense of what’s happening around them and gives them an opportunity to express themselves in a familiar and positive way. Having access to an outdoor space where they can move, play and enjoy some fresh air can help reduce anxiety, provide a sense of normality and support their emotional wellbeing during their time in hospital. It’s also a wonderful space for parents to take a break outdoors with their child or for siblings to spend time together when visiting.”

Well Foundation Chief Executive Ruth Morse said creating welcoming spaces that enhance the hospital experience is an important part of the Foundation's work.
“Being in hospital can be an incredibly stressful experience for children and their families. A welcoming outdoor space where children can play, siblings can spend time together and parents can simply step outside for some fresh air can make a real difference during what is often a very difficult time”
nib NZ Chief Executive Sky Daniels said the project reflects the power of partnership in supporting local communities.
““We’re proud to partner with Well Foundation on this project and help create an environment that brings a little more joy, colour and comfort to children and families spending time at Waitākere Hospital. This revitalised play area is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when organisations come together to support the health and wellbeing of local communities.”
The project reflects Well Foundation's commitment to funding enhancements that go beyond what public funding can provide, helping enhance hospital environments and patient experiences across North Shore and Waitākere Hospitals.
